Our girl’s weekend was off to a rough start with some chilly and rainy weather hitting Sydney. We had planned to walk from our hotel to Darling Harbour to check out the sights, however the rain just wasn’t letting up so had to run for cover. Trying to find something close by where we could stop and grab some food, we found the Tokio Hotel along the Cockle Bay Wharf. There were a few tables seated inside so thought we would give it a try and wait for the rain to settle.
ATMOSPHERE & SERVICE
During the day this is your typical waterfront cafe/restaurant and cocktail lounge with a relaxed setting. By night, the space becomes a lively atmosphere with live music showcasing some of Australia’s most talented entertainers. Each night the venue hosts something different from amateur night to more talented performers and even some international talent. All types of music are performed here from rock to party bands to blues/soul.
The space screams your typical rock and roll venue with a large feature bar with every mix available, a large black stage for performances and posters hung throughout the space to promote upcoming events. Black walls and dark exposed piping fill the space to give it that hard feel wanted for the perfect rock ambiance.
The open terrace space boosts amazing views of Darling Harbour and is one of the best places to sit back with a coffee (or beer) and people watch. We popped ourselves up on the oversized dark brown couches and made our selves comfortable while we watched the rain come down.
FOOD
We made it just in time for breakfast and was only fitting to start the chilly day with a nice hot cup of coffee. At bit on the weak side, but very well made (and almost lived up to my Melbourne standards).
I kept it simple this morning and just went with poached eggs, bacon and toast. The eggs were well over cooked and the bacon was some of the saltiest I’ve ever day. Although I am a fan of slightly hard poached eggs, I think the chef must have forgotten about these eggs when cooking. It’s not too hard to fault a very simple breakfast and this was just what it was, simple.
I’m sure this place has a great rep for their live music and late night atmosphere, however from a foodie point of view, the food was quite plain and simple. Nothing out of this world or anything to make me want to come back for more. For somewhere with such an amazing view, I would have though the food would have been a bit more interesting.
