Positano is one of those towns where there many not be an overload of things to see and do, but you could spend weeks here and feel completely relaxed by the end. The natural setting is breathtaking, the food is delicious and the shopping is some of the best the coast has to offer. Positano is known as the ‘Jewel of the Amalfi Coast’ due to its picturesque coastline.
Below are our top things to do while visiting Positano.
1. Spiaggia Grande
Spiaggia Grande is one of the largest beaches in Positano, with greg, pebbly sand. It may not be the best beach in Italy, but tourists and locals flock here on hot summer days to cool off. The water here is crystal clear and clean, perfect for frolicking in the water.
Keep in mind most of the beaches in Positano are run by private companies offering sun beds and umbrellas, however if you are just wanting to bring your own towel and relax, there is a free beach area closer to where the ferries dock.
Here you will also find ample cafes, restaurant and small shops to keep everyone happy for the day. You can spend the morning at the shops and when it becomes to hot, head down to the water and cool off before enjoying some lunch at one of the many family owned restaurants.
2. Shopping
If you’re a big lover of shopping like me, then Positano is a great place to spend some cash. It may not be Paris shopping, but we definitely think it’s some of the better shopping in Amalfi. Positano is known for their own fashion, famous for high end beachwear, leather goods and olive oil. Their love for beach clothing starting in the early 1900s and become more popular in the 60’s with their use for light weight fabrics such as linen and lace.
You can walk the streets during the day or later at night once the sun has set and find boutique shops at every corner and laneway. With the heat of the summer, shops tend to stay open later for those who are looking to shop when it’s a bit cooler.
3. Piazza dei Mulini
For us to get from our hotel (Eden Roc Hotel) to Spiaggia Grande, we needed to walk through Piazza dei Mulini. This beautiful little square is named after an old mill of Emperor Tiberius, which is where you will bring the stunning Church of Our Lady of the Rosary.
The area is not accessible by car, so you are required to walk here from either your hotel, or the special car park located near by. Surrounding the square are boutique shops, cafes and restaurants, all family owned and operated.
TIPS
- Best time to visit is spring or autumn. July and August are the two hottest months of the year.
- Designer warehouses can be found here, like Prada and Gucci
- Good shopping for leather goods, olive oil and cheese
- Close distance to Capri, which can be reached either by ferry, charter boat or plane.
