Melbourne may not have the perfect weather year round, but when we do have a day when the sun is shining, we make the most of it. What better way to enjoy an afternoon in the sun, than with an oversized blanket, bottle of wine and some delicious snacks.

We’ve picked our favourite top 5 picnic locations around Melbourne.

1. Royal Botanic Garden

One of our absolute favourite hang outs is at the Royal Botanical Garden’s, or to us Melbournians, ‘The Tan’. Lush greenery, colourful flowers, hidden waterfalls and an abundance of shade from all the trees, this is the perfect location to kick back and relax. With more than 96 acres of space, there is enough space to enjoy a picnic with no neighbours in sight.

Keep in mind BBQ’s are not permitted, so it’s picnic baskets all the way here. Kick back and watch the birds splash in the lake or enjoy a nap under one of the many trees.

2. Edinburgh Gardens

Located in the heart of North Fitzroy, this is the home to hipsters, picnic goers and those out for a casual stroll. With nearly 65 acres of space, this was once home to the former Fitzroy Football Club. The park features everything from BBQ’s, picnic tables, bocce & lawn bowling rinks, table-tennis tables and skate facilities, just to name a few. An afternoon well spent here with so many activities for everyone’s likes.

3. St Kilda Botanical Gardens

Exotic trees, bright flowers and acres of green grass fill the lush grounds creating the perfect location to bask in the sun in good company. But, did we mention the giant cheese board? That’s right, a giant cheese board, plus Rain Man fountain, children’s play space, ornamental pond and a beautiful gazebo can be found here as well.

If you’re lucky, you may even get to witness a magical wedding taking place in the gardens. Over the years the gardens have quickly become the go to place for afternoon ceremonies.

4. Carlton Gardens, Carlton

Carlton Gardens is close to my heart. We had our engagement photo’s taken here, so it was pretty obvious that we needed to add the Carlton Gardens to our top 5 list! It’s one of those gardens that seems untouched and completely peaceful. Oversized trees line the walk ways, exquisite flower beds fill the park and gorgeous fountains all make for a stunning background.

One of the highlights of the park is the Victorian-era Hochgurtel Fountain and circular French Fountain, which was created for the 1880 exhibition.

5. Rippon Lea House & Gardens

The final location on our list is the Rippon Lea House & Gardens, which was build in the 19th century. Very Anna Green Gables like, this is a stunning location for afternoon tea or spending an afternoon getting lost through the gardens.
