It was finally Sunday morning, which meant time to check out a new cafe! It was a beautiful day in Melbourne so thought we’d make the most of it and go for a drive and see where we ended up. Making a series of random turns, we ended up in Elwood (my dream suburb to live in!). We’ve been to a few cafes in Elwood and definitely wanted to try something new so made our way over to a little corner cafe called Cafe de Cuba.
ATMOSPHERE & SERVICE
This cosy little cafe offers a small alfresco area for those beautiful Melbourne days as well as ample seating inside during the cooler months. Floor to ceiling windows fill the space to let in lots of natural lighting.
The fit out is quite simple with large wooden tables and chairs, concreate flooring and some funky lighting. A large mint green feature wall instantly catches your eye as you walk in, with the colour working its way through the cafe on the legs of some of the tables.
The service was friendly and attentive throughout our brunch. Coffees were brought out within a few minutes of ordering, and our waitress was energetic and lovely to speak with. Definitely loved her job!
FOOD
The menu is small, showcasing some amazing breakfast and lunch staples. All your favourite breakfast dishes including pancakes, eggs your way, BLT’s and omelettes are available all day, plus from 12pm onward, small snacks like dips and calamari or pizza’s, focaccia sandwiches and salads are all available.
Although it was 1pm by the time we arrived, we are definitely lovers of breakfast so were quite happy they had an all day breakfast menu. We started with our morning caffeine fix of a piccolo and cappuccino, both creamy and delicious.
MC did his usual build your own breakfast of poached eggs, bacon, avocado, hashbrowns and mushrooms. Portion size was generous and he did note the bacon was some of the better bacon he’s had in a while. I guess some are picky when it comes to their bacon!
I ordered the ‘Smashed Avocado’ served with poached eggs, portobello mushrooms, feta and drizzled with truffle oil. This is actually probably the best smashed avo I’ve ever had! There wasn’t a mountain of avocado on the toast (which I was happy with) and the poached egg was cooked exactly to my liking (not runny). The truffle oil was the stand out of the dish and worked beautifully with the portobello mushroom.
I really enjoyed our late brunch at Cafe de Cuba. The atmosphere was laid back and relaxing, the food was homey and tasty and the service was friendly. I love Elwood and their quaint little suburb. Any reason to head down to Elwood and we are there!
