My favourite day of the week was finally here! Lazy Sundays consist of an amazing breakfast with good company. After a somewhat big Saturday night, the morning was in desperate need of both caffeine and some serious comfort foods. The sun was shining, so where better to go than Port Melbourne to Cafe Lafayette overlooking the Port Phillip Bay.
ATMOSPHERE & SERVICE
Located just off popular Bay Street, Cafe Lafayette overlooks the beautiful Port Melbourne Beach, offering a beachy cafe vibe. The cafe features polished concrete floors, cafe style tables with funky wire chairs. Large bay windows cover two sides of the cafe to let in the natural light with bench seating to enjoy the stunning views.
The family owned cafe stays true to their values with friendly and attentive service. It was quite busy when we arrived, but with a bit if wiggling around, we were able to get a seat overlooking the beach. Orders were taken promptly and food arrived only a short time later.
FOOD
The menu runs not only an all-day breakfast but also an all day lunch menu. So if you’re not one for brekky, then you are in luck! Everything from eggs and French toast, to dumplings and twice cooked pork belly are available at any time throughout the day.
I was instantly drawn in for the freak shakes that I’ve recently seen, so we were all for the breakfast menu! We started off rather healthy with their ‘Chai-Spiced Bircher’ with blue berries, poached pear, yoghurt, mixed berry compote, grains and micro herbs. Presentation was stunning and the flavour was beautiful. The yoghurt was just the right amount of tartness, which worked well with the sweetness from the fresh fruit.
If the bircher wasn’t beautiful enough, it was time to get serious with their freak shake! There were three specials available, all different spectrum of sweetness. It went from double chocolate goodness, to peanut butter, to green tea. Trying to be as good as we could, we decided to go with the green tea option, topped with green tea cake, kit kats, whip cream, honeycomb and popping candy.
Every single table had one of these drinks in front of them, so was pretty apparent why everyone came here. They were good, but not GREAT! The price was quite reasonable, which is why I think so many people order them.
Overall we absolutely loved our morning at Cafe Lafayette. The service was friendly, the food tasty and the views beautiful. Can’t wait to come back to try the rest of the menu.
