It was our first night in Hobart and we were after something laid back, delicious and centrally located to where we were staying. A few people had recommended Frank Restaurant & Bar, so thought we would take them up on the recommendation and check it out.
ATMOSPHERE & SERVICE
We arrived quite late into Hobart, so made a booking for 9:30pm. I thought we would be one of the last tables to arrive, however there were still a few others being seated when we arrived as well. The restaurant is located near Elizabeth pier, with ocean views. Inside, the space has an industrial feel with exposed black ceilings, concrete flooring and iron rails to create some separation between the different areas.
Throughout the venue are variety of different lighting fixtures, creating a dimly lit ambiance. Accents of red are seen through furniture, lighting and decor for an added pop of colour.
The staff were friendly and polite and were quick to fill up water and wine, which is always a plus for us!
FOOD
The menu is influenced through South American tapas style dishes, from tender cuts of meat to delicious local street food, the menu is versatile to cater to all tastes. Since we unfortunately had a bit of a snack on the plane, we weren’t overly hungry, so decided to order just a few dishes to share between the two of us.
We started with the ‘Southern calamari’ with ajillo & squid ink rice. I wasn’t sure about the squid ink rice, as I am still getting use to the whole idea of eating seafood. However, I found this to be the best part of the dish. It was slightly sweet with just a hint of fishiness. You could tell the calamari was fresh and was cooked beautifully.
Next was the ‘Chargrilled Marinated Baby Chicken’ served with avocado, chilli, mint, coriander & lime. It was a bit on the sweet side for my liking, however the chicken was extremely tender and juicy and the avocado brought a beautiful buttery texture to the dish.
Coming to an Argentinean restaurant, it was a must to order meat. MC ordered a delicious steak, cooked medium rare. There were a few extra fatty bits on the steak, however made for some great flavouring.
Our side consisted of ‘Crisp Potatoes’ with cultured cream, chipotle vinegar, coriander, red onion. I loved the cream that the potatoes sat on, which balanced the flavours from the vinegar.
Overall, we had a wonderful dinner at Frank Restaurant & Bar. The food was delicious, the service was friendly and the atmosphere was relaxed.
