A sunny Sunday morning lead us down the coast to Sandringham, where we stumbled across the Black Squirrel Cafe. I have seen a few mentions of the cafe over the year, so thought we would pop in and check out what they had to offer.
ATMOSPHERE & SERVICE
Located along the main shopping strip in Sandringham, this rustic style cafe is just a short walk from the beach. I instantly fell in love with their gorgeous decor and stunning rustic exposed brick walls.
Industrial style communal tables and chairs, high ceilings and brushed concrete floors fill the large space. Copper accents and hints of greenery add a warm welcome to the space.
We arrived quite early, which meant the cafe was still pretty quite, however there was a constant flow of guests ordering take-away coffees and pastries from their large cabinet. The service was attentive and friendly from the moment we walked through the door.
FOOD
I’ve been struggling to get over a pretty horrible cold, so opted to go over a tea instead of my usual caffeine fix. A cute black tea pot arrived on a small wooden board waiting to be poured once steeped.
For my brekky, I decided to try their ‘Breakfast Board’ which was a sample of their housemade Bircher, smashed avocado and a side of fresh fruit and also added a side of their potato rosti to try. I loved the presentation of the dish which was full of colour and a great size of each item to try. Perfect for those who want to try a few different options!
MC went for his usual and ordered ‘The Full Squirrel’ served with two poached eggs, bacon, roasted tomato, mushrooms, smashed avocado, potato rosti & relish on toast. Again another well put together dish with pops of colour and a decent amount of food.
Overall I was quite pleased with our brekky choice this morning. It was a bit pricy for what you get, however the food was fresh and portion sizes were perfect.
