We had a weekend in Brisbane for work, and although we aren’t very familiar with the dining scene here, we always seem to find some pretty amazing hidden gems without having to look too far. I had a few hours to kill and a bit of work to catch up on, so was looking for somewhere a bit more quite to set up shop for a few hours. Driving past Cafe Auchenflower, I knew straight away this was going to be the perfect little spot for me to spend my morning.

ATMOSPHERE & SERVICE

From the front entrance, you already get a very homely feel before you even walk through the front door. The white framed windows bring a suburban feel to the cafe with a customised rustic chalkboard welcoming you into the inside.

Moving inside, the space is filled with mismatched tables and chairs (which I love) a few high top window seats and a large communal table. The decor inside was quite simple with just white walls and dark concrete floors.

There is also the added bonus of the back patio area, which would definitely get quite a bit of use with the beautiful Brisbane weather. I didn’t realise there was an outdoor area until we left and I saw the entrance off to the side of the cafe.

FOOD

Their menu is small with a range of both sweet and savoury items to choose from. I decided to order the ‘House Granola’ served with poached apples & pears and topped with vanilla yoghurt. The toasted granola was beautiful with hints of pecans, almonds and coconut and a slight bitterness from the cranberries. The poached fruit offered a wonderful sweet finish to the dish.

Overall breakfast was wonderful. I was relaxed without having felt like I had to leave at any point which was a nice change from some cafes that make you feel like you need to leave as soon as your meal is done. This is the perfect hidden little gem in Auchenflower!
