It was finally Sunday, which meant my turn to pick our new Brekky spot. Sticking with our current love for South Melbourne, I decided to head down to Dead Man Espresso, due to all the amazing coffee reviews they have gotten. We are always looking for the next best all day breakfast, so it was time to check out Dead Man Espresso.

ATMOSPHERE & SERVICE

Located on Market Street, the inside cafe is quite spacious with balcony seating around two sides of the cafe to create a more open concept with large bay windows. Walking in, the space is funky with black walls and ceilings and exposed bulb lighting.

Wooden tables and chairs fill both the inside and balcony space with polished concrete flooring. The outdoor balcony area is completely covered to help cater for Melbourne’s crazy weather.

If family visiting from overseas, we were a bit slow on ordering food as we were trying to catch up on missed time. I think our waitress was getting a bit frustrated since she couldn’t crack a smile the entire time she was looking after us.

FOOD

Known for their amazing coffee, it was an absolute must for us all to order a coffee to start our Sunday off on the right foot. The coffee was incredible, smooth, hot and full of flavour. The baristas definitely know how to start your morning right!

With a menu full of amazing dishes, it was so hard to pin point what we all wanted. MC started with the ‘Campfire Breakfast‘ served in skillet with bacon, black pudding, house beans, tomato, mushrooms, hash & poached eggs and toast. Great presentation, no shortage of food and full of flavour.

LC and RC ordered the ‘Waffles‘ with apples, a sweet caramel sauce & marscapone and of with bacon & maple syrup. The apple waffles were amazing, however a bit on the sweet side for so early in the morning. The bacon and maple waffles were good, but a bit bland.

I decided to go with the ‘Wild Bircher’ quinoa bircher with Coyo, grated apple & poached pears. It was good, however I’ve definitely had better birchers before.

Overall the coffee was amazing, and the food was okay. The layout of the cafe is spacious yet cosy and the service was average. Although they serve up some amazing coffee, I think we will continue to hunt for the best South Melbourne cafe.
