With a new bub on board, we’ve made it a weekly routine to head out every Tuesday for coffee and a quick bite to eat. Finding somewhere that can accommodate more than one pram has been a bit of a mission, but have been able to find some amazing places with great food. Today’s catch up was at Oscar’s Hangout, which is is a great little neighbourhood gem situated around gorgeous houses in Mordialloc.

ATMOSPHERE & SERVICE

Located off the beaten track, I thought we were lost when we had to take a series of turns through a quiet neighbourhood until we came to a small white building, housing three local businesses. This fully licensed, family friendly cafe is the perfect location to bring the kiddies as there is a large outdoor grassed area for them to run around.

The decor is quite simple with dark concrete floors, a few hanging pendent lights and a large timber bar. I loved the large floor to ceiling windows that completely covered two of the walls, letting in so much natural light.

The staff were warm and welcoming, and very accommodating given the amount of room we took up. They brought water and menus over as soon as we were seated and orders were taken shortly after.

FOOD

Serving up all day breakfast and great coffee, it was hard to decide between their breakfast and lunch menu. It was late morning, so we all decided to go with dishes from the breakfast column, starting with ‘Oscars Big Breakfast’ served with eggs your way, chorizo, bacon, hash browns, cherry tomatoes, crumbed mushrooms, wilted spinach on sourdough. Everything was cooked well and all with a slight twist to what you’d normally expect. Crumbed mushrooms for example, was crunchy on the outside but moist and delicious on the inside. Winner!

Next was the ‘Sweet Corn Fritters’ served with avocado, poached eggs, smoked yoghurt and a fresh cucumber tomato salsa. The fritters were jam packed with flavour and paired with the smoked yoghurt, this was another winning dish! There was nothing to fault here.

The final dish out was the ‘Green Stack’ consisting of asparagus, broccolini and spinach stacked on rye bread with pesto, smoked almonds, goats cheese and chilli. I’m not sure how this place isn’t more popular as this was a knock out dish! All the greens were cooked to perfection and loved the kick from the chilli and the goats cheese brought everything together.

Overall this is a fantastic neighbourhood gem. The food was stunning, it’s a great location to bring the kiddies and the service was friendly and attentive. We will definitely be heading back to check out a few more dishes in the near future.
